Dave Willacy: An Appreciation
We were saddened to hear recently of the death of Dave Willacy, a longtime resident of Arnside.
Since late 2023, Dave has been gifting this archive, week by week, his very extensive research, compiled over years by him and his cousin by going through many family documents and frequent visits to Archives offices in Lancaster, Preston, Kendal and so on. He has brought us a great deal of material about the Saul family who had owned Saltcotes, Lawrence House, Beechwood and one of the Black Dyke farms, some from late 1600s, often for many years. He has also given us information about other important local families and houses and the development of the village, about village life and activities this century.
There are eleven huge box files already with us, along with maps and artefacts, all individually recorded.
Dave was Chair of the Parish Council for many years and active on Arnside’s behalf in every way. It was always said, any problem, footpaths, hedges, access, roads, potholes, sewage etc, etc. - contact Dave. He always knew who to contact whatever, local, district or county, who and how, and always found the remedy. No problem was without his interest. Apparently, he knew the number of each lamppost and telegraph pole in the village. Problem? Ask Dave. He’d ring the Arnside engineer for the relevant Electricity supplier. Job sorted.
Dave was so pleased to be a part of Archives that he readily agreed to help at the Archives Autumn exhibition, The People of Arnside. At his table and chair, ‘Ask Dave’ became a major feature of the event, many people with queries, which he could virtually always answer. A fine addition to the event, for which Archives was indebted to him.
The Archives Society is so grateful that he wanted to share all his research and knowledge about the village he was born and grew up in and which he loved all his life.
